At Optometry Australia, we believe that everyone in the health sector has a role to play when it comes to reducing our climate impact. A goal in our Strategic Plan for 2021-2024 is to explore and develop initiatives as appropriate on emerging evidence on the impact of climate change, specifically on optometry and eye health.

Over the last year, Optometry Australia has begun a conversation with members about environmental sustainability and climate action within the profession. We have published a position statement, informed by member perspectives; profiled members who have set up a sustainable practice; and have recently engaged specialist sustainability consultants Edge Environment to work with us to develop a Sustainability Roadmap.

The Roadmap will identify environmental targets and action issues that are important for our sector, and the initiatives that Optometry Australia can establish to best support our members’ sustainability practices. This process will be guided by the priorities and ideas of our members and industry stakeholders, as well as a carbon footprint and waste audit data. It’s important that we establish how optometry is contributing to emissions and what achievable measures we can recommend that will help to reduce a practice’s climate impact.

As part of this process, we are undertaking a series of 60-minute focus groups to uncover existing and emerging sustainability opportunities and challenges. The focus groups will be held on Microsoft Teams. No prior preparation is required, and your identity will be kept anonymous in subsequent stages of the project.

We are inviting members to express interest in participating in these focus groups, with a handful of places available at the below times. If you are interested, please email policy@optometry.org.au, indicating which time below suits you best:

Acknowledgement of Country

In the spirit of reconciliation Optometry Australia acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
