Optometry Australia has devoted significant time engaging with nine health insurers – who collectively comprise 90 per cent of the market – to build one helpful resource created exclusively for members to decode what can often be a confusing topic.

Private health insurance rules & rebate conditions 2021 is an easy to understand resource that addresses common questions optometrists have around billing and compliance with respect to private health insurance (PHI), such as:

  • Can a rebate be used as a partial payment at time of ordering if the product is paid in full?
  • Can a product be purchased over two years (frames and lenses) to maximise rebate?
  • Can a rebate be provided on only a frame if a patient chooses to get lenses elsewhere?
  • Do plano lenses need to be retained if a patient purchases a complete pair of prescription sunglasses?

You can download your own copy of the private health insurance resource here; it is the first clickable link.

Acknowledgement of Country

In the spirit of reconciliation Optometry Australia acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
