Optometry is on track to have about 200,000 more consultations in 2016 than last year.

Groups of Optometry Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items show an increase in comparison to the same quarter last year with the exception of contact lens items and the domiciliary loading.

An item introduced on 1 September 2015 for corneal foreign body removal has been well-utilised but telehealth services, for which items were also introduced on 1 September, have remained low.

Perimetry and children’s items have steadily increased in 2016.
