Optometry Australia is preparing its post-election advocacy to both the Government and the Opposition in the wake of the week-long wait for an outcome in the federal election.

CEO Genevieve Quilty has welcomed the re-election of the Coalition Government and Malcolm Turnbull as Prime Minister.

‘We anticipate reconnecting with the government once ministerial appointments are finalised,’ she said.

It is not yet known when ministers will be announced, and whether the current Minister for Health Sussan Ley, Minister for Rural Health Fiona Nash, and Shadow Minister for Health Catherine King will be reappointed.

The front bench is expected to be decided over the coming days.

‘Optometry Australia will be penning letters to the Health Minister and Shadow Health Minister on a range of issues, including Medicare and the freeze, the Visiting Optometrists Scheme and the importance of strengthening primary eye care,’ Ms Quilty said.
