More optometrists are needed to join a nationwide locum register.

Earlier this year three separate locum programs were amalgamated into one to improve the ability of health-care professionals in rural Australia to take leave and undertake CPD activities, and to improve the retention of these health professionals in rural locations.

The Department of Health contracted Canberra-based Aspen Medical to manage the amalgamated program, known as the Rural Locum Assistance Program (Rural LAP).

Rural LAP combines the Nursing and Allied Health Rural Locum Scheme (NAHRLS), the Rural Obstetric and Anaesthetic Locum Scheme (ROALS) and the Rural Locum Education Assistance Programme (Rural LEAP).

Rural LAP is continuing to provide locum support to optometrists.
