Less than half of optometrists around Australia have registered on the National Health Services Directory, Allied Health Professions Australia has revealed.
Registering on the directory could increase referrals from other health professionals.
About 2,181 optometrists are registered on the directory but there are more than 5,000 registered optometrists in Australia, according to statistics released by the Optometry Board of Australia in April this year.
The bulk of optometrists registered on the directory are in Sydney (614), Melbourne (580) and Brisbane (391).
The National Health Services Directory is a free directory of health services that provides reliable and consistent information about health and health-related services. It is designed to help health professionals identify appropriate services to refer to and to help consumers find health services in their area.
The directory contains more than 150,000 service listings across 300 service types, such as general practices, pharmacies, hospitals, specialists, community health services and allied health providers.
In addition to standard information such as location and contact details, opening hours, and appointment and payment options, the directory can provide detailed information about specialised services such as languages spoken by practitioners.
Health professionals and the public can access the directory via a website and iOS and Android apps.
