  • For complex HR or workplace issues, members can access free, initial advice from OA’s HR legal partner, Industry Legal Group. ILG is staffed by HR lawyers with specific knowledge of the optometry profession.

Premium Professional Indemnity Insurance

Our premium PII policy covers each member for $20 million (not pooled with other members) with $0 excess. It covers you wherever you work in Australia, paid or unpaid and exceeds Ahpra’s registration requirements. This comprehensive policy includes automatic cover for your practice staff, working under your instruction.

You also have 24/7 access to a confidential medico-legal hotline 7 days a week, and to our Optometry Advisor Help Desk. Our PII policy covers you for life with free one-on-one support in the event of a malpractice claim or patient complaint. 

Quality Continuing Professional Development (CPD) & Events

Accessible through our Institute of Excellence (CPD), our education portfolio includes conferences, regular live webcasts, interactive workshops and an extensive library of on-demand webcasts and publications. Each member has a dedicated CPD portfolio that meets Optometry Board of Australia (Ahpra) CPD standards. We automatically CPD hours that you complete that has been quality assured by Optometry Australia.

Member Advice & Support

Members can call our Help Desk Monday-Friday for one-on-one advice, such as on Medicare billing,  contract or workplaces issues, clinical advice, privacy or patient complaints. No matter how big or small your query, we are only a phone call or email away. We take pride in providing you with independent and unbiased advice and this will be provided in complete confidentiality and without judgement.

We strongly lobby and campaign for policy changes that will ensure optometrists are working at their full scope while our long-term planning through Optometry 2040, is guiding the sector’s evolution and sustainability

Awareness and Marketing Campaigns

Our campaigns are aimed at increasing awareness of eye health amongst Australians whilst motivating regular visit to an optometrist throughout life. Our marketing programs include our Good vision for life campaign, Find an optometrist search platform that connects patients to our members, patient brochures and marketing support materials.

• Travel scholarships: Our Looking Outward on Optometric Knowledge (LOOK) scholarship program offers members the opportunity to investigate advancements in overseas markets of optometric clinical and patient management and/or eye health disease.
Leadership Development
• Governance training: Our Governance, Oversight, Leadership and Development (GOLD) program provides governance skills to optometrists to enable them to confidentiality hold leadership roles on boards both within the optometry sector and in the broader health sector.

• Think Tanks: Each state division supports and oversees an early career optometrists (ECO) group and annually Optometry Australia brings representatives from each ECO group together for facilitated discussions, experience sharing and skills development.

• Student Leadership Program: Annually, a group of students enter our Student Leadership Program created to provide them with the skills needed to become future optometry leaders.

• Committees and advisory group participation: Opportunities to join subject specific groups or committees that discuss and develop strategies for the progression of the sector.
